Tuomu is one of those brands I always wanted because of their quality - both pieces and designs - but they never had just the right set for me. Well, until they released this one - Solar System Music Box (T1123, 989 pcs) - earlier this year. Solar system sets are very popular among Chinese brands, and even Tuomu themselves have more than one. However, here it is Solar system AND music box AND it also has lights!
Ordered at AE Yes Blcoks Store for 31,20 Eur (sale coupon+coins), 16 days to the EU. Not a cheap set, yes. But its Tuomu quality and again - it has music box and lights. Also, came with its original box (though damaged).
Relaxed building took about 3 hour and 50 minutes.
Brick quality: I still don't know if Tuomu uses GoBricks, but it looks like GoBricks - at least quality-wise there is no difference. This build is mostly technic and the tolerances are Lego-level. No scratched pieces, even the huge dome is perfectly fine. 10/10.
Design: The construction is essentially hollow which makes it lighter (despite being at least 2 times bigger than I expected) and also provides access to the main light. I say "main" light because the "Sun" has its own light pieces and it's the first design flaw - you have to remove the dome and disassembly the sun to turn it on or off. The solar system itself is purely symbolic, I appreciate that they made it moving - the "Sun" rotates and the "planets" rotate around the sun, but I surely don't like that the "planets" are placed randomly, there are just 7 of them (plus one moon), and some are hardly recognisable. Of course I can see Saturn, maybe also Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Neptune, but what are the rest supposed to be? Uranus has wrong colour and is too small, and if it's Earth and our Moon, then Moon may be ok, but the Earth is too big and also weirdly coloured. The music is working well, the main lights have tricky access, but are also nice. I don't know much about Zodiac, but I believe the signs are not properly corresponding to their months, though it's an easy fix, I was just too lazy and did as instructed by the manual. 6/10 for too little actual Solar system in this Solar system set.
Stickers/prints: no stickers as always with Tuomu, all prints are nice and clean. 10/10.
Instructions: came a bit damaged - I guess for the same reason as with the box. The paper is a bit on the cheap side. A bit too much steps per page, but I like it. Perfectly clear, there are 3 main steps, the bags are numbered and further sorted within one step. The final step which was mostly system parts took me twice as long to accomplish because placing all the decorations was a bit tricky. 8/10.
To conclude, 34/40, looks stunning, functions well, but too many compromises were made in regards to depicting our Solar system.
